The number of calories in a bowl of chips depends on the portion and how they were cooked.

Juma started tracking what he ate after his doctor mentioned his weight at a check-up. He expected the surprise to be soda. Instead it was the chips. Not because chips are "bad", but because the plate he bought every evening at the corner spot held almost twice the portion he would have guessed, cooked in oil that had seen a long day.

So how many calories are in french fries? It depends mainly on two things: how much you eat and how they were cooked. As a guide, US Department of Agriculture data puts frozen fries heated in the oven at roughly 150 to 160 calories per 100 g, while deep-fried restaurant fries are around 280 to 300 calories per 100 g, because they absorb oil. A typical medium portion of 150 g of deep-fried chips is therefore about 420 to 450 calories. Below we break it down by portion and method, and share simple ways to enjoy chips with fewer calories.

How many calories are in 100 g of fries?

Figures from the USDA FoodData Central database give a useful picture. Values vary by product, cut and how much oil is absorbed, so treat these as approximate:

Type of friesApprox. calories per 100 g
Frozen fries, cooked in the oven150 to 160
Frozen fries, cooked in an air fryerSimilar to oven, slightly more if oil is sprayed
Deep-fried restaurant fries280 to 300
Very thin, crispy fast-food friesOften higher, as thin fries absorb more oil

The big jump between oven and deep fryer comes from oil. A gram of fat has about 9 calories, more than twice as much as a gram of starch or protein, so even a little extra oil on the surface adds up quickly.

How many calories are in a portion of chips?

Most people do not eat 100 g. Here is what common portions look like for deep-fried chips at about 290 calories per 100 g:

PortionWeightApprox. calories (deep-fried)Approx. calories (oven)
Small side100 gabout 290about 155
Medium plate150 gabout 435about 230
Large plate250 gabout 725about 385
Chipsi mayai (chips plus 2 eggs, fried)200 g chipsroughly 700 to 800 in total

These are estimates to help you plan, not lab results. Your plate may differ with the oil, the cut and the cook. Our portion guide shows typical serving sizes for homes and restaurants.

Does the cooking method really matter?

Yes, more than anything else after portion size. Here is how the main methods compare:

How well you fry matters too. Fries cooked in oil that is too cool, or in old oil, soak up much more of it. Our guide on how to make fries less oily explains the simple fixes.

What else is in french fries besides calories?

Potatoes bring useful things to the plate: energy from starch, some fibre (especially with skin on), potassium and vitamin C, although frying and storage reduce some vitamin C. Fries also contain fat from the cooking oil and, often, a lot of salt from seasoning. For most people the two things worth watching are portion size and salt.

Different oils contain different fats. Our guide to the best oil for frying chips compares common oils used in Tanzania.

How can you enjoy chips with fewer calories?

  1. Choose a smaller portion. A 100 g side instead of a 250 g plate can save hundreds of calories.
  2. Use the air fryer or oven at home. You get crisp chips with much less oil.
  3. Fry properly when you deep fry. Hot oil (about 175°C), small batches, and a good shake and drain afterwards.
  4. Drain on a rack. Paper or a wire rack lets extra oil drip away.
  5. Go easy on mayonnaise and cheese sauce. Dips can add as many calories as the chips. Kachumbari, pilipili and tomato salsa add flavour for very few.
  6. Salt lightly. Try spices like masala, paprika or garlic instead. See our seasoning ideas.
  7. Build a balanced plate. Pair chips with grilled chicken or fish and a big salad instead of making chips the whole meal.
  8. Share. One plate of chips for two is still a treat.

How do fries compare with other sides?

Per 100 g, oven-cooked fries are in the same range as many starchy sides, while deep-fried chips are higher. Plain boiled potatoes, rice and ugali contain less fat because they are not fried. But taste and enjoyment matter too, and nobody eats chips for the same reasons they eat boiled potatoes. The aim is balance, not banning foods you enjoy. Our comparison of chips vs rice vs ugali goes into more detail.

Can fries be part of a healthy diet?

Yes, for most people, in sensible portions and not as the centre of every meal. Health organisations such as the World Health Organization recommend limiting fats, salt and sugar overall and eating plenty of vegetables, fruit and whole grains. A plate of chips once or twice a week alongside protein and salad fits that comfortably. If you have a medical condition, follow your doctor's or dietitian's advice.

Juma still eats chips. He now orders the small portion, asks for kachumbari instead of mayonnaise, and at home he uses the oven. "I did not give them up," he says. "I just stopped eating twice as many as I thought."

How can you estimate calories when eating out?

Restaurants rarely weigh portions, so use your hand and the plate as a guide. A portion of chips that fills one cupped hand is roughly 80 to 100 g. A full side plate of chips is often 200 g or more. Ask for a small portion, or share one large plate, and ask for sauces on the side so you control how much you use. If the chips look very shiny or leave oil on the paper, they have absorbed more oil than usual, usually because the oil was too cool or old.

In short

French fries contain roughly 150 to 160 calories per 100 g when frozen fries are cooked in the oven, and about 280 to 300 calories per 100 g when deep-fried, because frying adds oil. A medium 150 g portion of deep-fried chips is about 420 to 450 calories. To enjoy chips with fewer calories, choose smaller portions, use an air fryer or oven, fry at the right temperature, drain well, use light dips and salt, and serve chips alongside protein and salad.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in a plate of chips?

A medium 150 g plate of deep-fried chips has roughly 420 to 450 calories. The same portion cooked in the oven is closer to 230 calories.

Are air fryer fries lower in calories?

Yes. Air fryer and oven fries use little or no added oil, so they usually have about half the calories of deep-fried fries per 100 g.

Why do deep-fried fries have more calories?

They absorb cooking oil, and fat has about 9 calories per gram, more than twice as much as starch or protein.

Do thin fries have more calories than thick fries?

Often, yes. Thin fries have more surface area, so they absorb more oil per gram than thick-cut chips.

Can I eat fries and still lose weight?

Many people do, by choosing small portions, cooking in the oven or air fryer and balancing the plate with protein and vegetables. Follow your doctor's advice for your situation.

How many calories are in chipsi mayai?

It varies widely, but a typical portion of about 200 g of fried chips cooked with two eggs can be roughly 700 to 800 calories.
