You are hosting a party on Saturday. Twenty guests, maybe more. You stand in front of the freezer wondering: is one pack enough, or do I need five? Buy too little and guests leave hungry; buy too much and you are not sure what to do with the rest. Planning fries is easier than it looks once you know a few simple numbers.

Buying too little leaves guests hungry; buying too much fills your freezer (which is fine, frozen fries keep for months). Use the tables below to plan for family dinners, parties and restaurant service.

How many grams of fries per person?

WhoAs a sideAs the main dish
Adult120 to 150 g200 to 250 g
Teenager150 g250 g
Child (5 to 12)80 to 100 g120 to 150 g
Small child (under 5)50 g80 g

Weigh fries frozen. Frozen fries lose some water as they cook but take up a little oil, so the cooked weight ends up close to the frozen weight.

How many 2 kg bags of fries do I need?

For 50 guests or more, a bulk order is usually simpler and cheaper. Supa Fries takes bulk orders from 15 kg, and delivery in Dar es Salaam is free on orders above TZS 150,000.

How much fries should I make for a party?

Add about 10 percent to the numbers above for parties, because hot fries disappear fast. If you are also serving rice, pilau or chapati, you can reduce fries to about 100 g per adult. For weddings and large events, see our full guide to catering with fries, including how many fryers you need.

What portion size should a restaurant use?

Pick a portion and stick to it, so every plate costs the same and every customer gets the same value:

Use a scoop or a box that holds exactly your portion. To set your price, see how to calculate chips cost per plate.

What can you do with leftover fries?

With frozen fries, the easy answer is to avoid leftovers: cook in batches and only open more when the first batch is nearly gone. If you do have cooked leftovers, reheat them in an air fryer or oven, or turn them into chipsi mayai the next morning.

What changes how much fries people eat?

How much should you serve children?

A child's portion of 80 to 120 g is plenty alongside some protein and vegetables. For a balanced children's plate, serve fries with an egg, chicken or beans and some fruit or kachumbari, rather than a big plate of chips on its own. Air frying or oven baking lowers the fat. How long does it take to cook fries for a crowd?

Cooking time grows with the number of batches, not just the total weight. In a home deep fryer, one batch of about 300 to 400 g takes about 3 minutes, plus a minute for the oil to recover. That is about 5 to 7 kg an hour if someone is frying non-stop. An oven with two trays can do about 1 to 1.5 kg every 20 minutes. For 50 people or more, plan two cooking stations or a commercial fryer. Our deep fryer guide explains capacity.

What should you do with extra packs?

Buying a little extra is safe with frozen fries. Unopened packs keep for up to 12 months at −18°C, so spare bags simply wait for the next meal. Opened bags should be resealed tightly and used within 1 to 2 months. Never refreeze fries that have thawed. See how to store frozen fries. For the full picture of what a single pack gives you, read the Supa Fries 2 kg pack guide.

Is a buffet different from a plated meal?

Yes. At a plated meal, the kitchen controls the portion, so you can plan exactly 150 g or 200 g per person. At a buffet, guests serve themselves and often take more of what they like best, and chips are usually near the top of that list. For buffets, add 10 to 20 percent to your fries estimate, and refill trays in small, fresh batches so nothing sits and goes soggy. For large events, read catering with fries.

What is a quick way to calculate?

Use this simple formula: number of adults × grams per person ÷ 1,000 = kilos of frozen fries. For children, count two children as roughly one adult. Then divide the kilos by 2 to get the number of 2 kg packs, and round up. Example: 30 adults and 10 children as a side dish: (30 + 5) × 150 ÷ 1,000 = 5.25 kg, which is 3 packs.

How do restaurants plan weekly fries orders?

Count how many plates with chips you sell each day for one or two weeks, multiply by your portion size, and add 10 percent for busy days. That gives your weekly kilos. Then compare with your freezer space and delivery schedule. For example, a spot selling 80 plates a day at 200 g uses about 16 kg a day, or around 110 kg a week. With weekly deliveries, plan freezer space for about a week and a half of stock. See the chest freezer guide and how to order Supa Fries.

In short

Plan about 150 g of frozen fries per adult when fries are a side dish, and 200 to 250 g when fries are the main part of the meal, as in chipsi mayai or chips kuku. Children usually eat 80 to 120 g. A 2 kg bag of frozen fries gives about 13 side portions or 8 to 10 main portions.
