Saidi's restaurant had served thousands of happy customers. It had 11 reviews on Google. Three of them were one star, all from the same bad Saturday when the generator failed and the kitchen ran an hour late. For anyone searching nearby, that was the whole story of his restaurant.
The fix was not complicated. He started asking. To get more restaurant reviews, make it easy (a QR code on every table and receipt), ask at the right moment (when a customer says they enjoyed the meal), reply to every review, and fix the problems that bad reviews point to. Within three months Saidi had more than 150 reviews and a 4.6 rating. Here is how to do the same, and how to handle the bad ones without making things worse.
Why do reviews matter so much?
New customers trust other diners more than they trust adverts. Reviews on Google and TripAdvisor affect how high you appear in searches and whether people tap on your listing. A restaurant with 200 reviews at 4.5 stars looks safer than one with 8 reviews at 5 stars. Reviews also tell you, for free, what customers love and what annoys them.
Where should you collect reviews?
| Platform | Who uses it | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps | Almost everyone searching nearby | Highest |
| TripAdvisor | Tourists and business travellers | High in Zanzibar, Arusha and city centres |
| Facebook and Instagram | Local followers | Medium |
| Delivery apps | Delivery customers | Medium if you deliver |
Focus on Google first. If tourists are a big part of your business, add TripAdvisor.
How do you ask for reviews without being awkward?
Most happy customers would leave a review if someone asked them. They just do not think of it. Try these:
- QR code on every table. Print your Google review link as a QR code with a simple line: "Enjoyed your meal? Tell others on Google."
- On the bill folder or receipt. People have their phones out to pay anyway.
- After delivery. Send the review link on WhatsApp an hour after the food arrives.
- At the right moment. When a customer says "The food was great," the waiter can say, "Thank you! It would really help us if you said that on Google."
- On your social media. Pin a post with the link.
Find your review link inside your Google Business Profile under "Ask for reviews". Our Google Maps guide explains how to set up the profile.
What should you never do?
- Do not buy reviews or ask friends to post fake ones. Platforms detect and remove them, and can penalise your listing.
- Do not pay for five stars or give discounts only to people who leave good reviews. Google's policies do not allow it.
- Do not ask only happy customers. It is fine to ask everyone; honest reviews are more believable.
- Do not argue in public. Even when the reviewer is wrong.
How should you reply to good reviews?
Thank them, use their name, mention something specific and invite them back. Keep it short and personal. Example:
"Thank you, Grace! So happy you liked the grilled fish and that Juma looked after you. See you next Friday."
Replying shows future customers that real people run the restaurant and care. It also encourages more people to write reviews.
How should you reply to bad reviews?
Take a breath first. Then follow four steps:
- Thank and apologise. "Thank you for telling us, and we are sorry your food was late."
- Explain briefly, without excuses. "Our generator failed on Saturday night, and we should have told you sooner."
- Say what you changed. "We now have a backup generator and a plan for power cuts."
- Move it offline. "Please WhatsApp us on 07XX XXX XXX so we can make it right."
Your reply is not really for the angry customer. It is for the hundreds of people who will read it later. A calm, honest reply often makes a restaurant look better than having no complaint at all.
What if a review is fake or abusive?
If a review breaks the platform's rules (spam, hate, a competitor pretending to be a customer, or someone who never visited), report it using the "Report review" option on Google or TripAdvisor. Write one short, polite public reply in the meantime: "We cannot find any record of this visit. Please contact us so we can look into it." Then move on.
How can reviews make your restaurant better?
Read all your reviews once a month and count what people mention. If five reviews say "slow service," that is not bad luck; it is a problem to fix. If ten mention "crispy chips" or "friendly staff," that is your strength, so put it in your marketing.
Common complaints in Tanzanian restaurant reviews include slow service, food served lukewarm, soggy chips, wrong orders and hard-to-find locations. Most can be fixed with better systems: a clear order process, smaller frying batches, better packaging for takeaway and an accurate map pin. Our guides on why fries go soggy and training your team help with the most common ones.
Customers notice when chips are crisp and golden every time. Supa Fries help your kitchen get there on every plate.

How do you get the team involved?
Many good reviews mention a waiter or cook by name. Share these with the team at the start of each shift. Some restaurants give a small monthly reward to the staff member mentioned most in reviews. It costs little and makes everyone care more about the experience.
How many reviews should you aim for?
Aim for a steady flow rather than a big burst. Two or three new reviews a week adds up to more than 100 a year. A rating between 4.3 and 4.8 with many reviews looks real and trustworthy. Do not panic over a few bad ones; respond well, fix the problem and keep asking happy customers to share their experience.

What are good reply templates you can adapt?
Write your replies in your own words, but these structures help when you are busy:
- Short praise: "Thank you, [name]! We are glad you enjoyed the [dish]. See you again soon."
- Mixed review: "Thank you for the honest feedback, [name]. Happy you liked the [good thing]. You are right about [problem], and we have [what you changed]. We hope you give us another try."
- Complaint: "We are sorry about [problem], [name]. That is not the standard we want. Please WhatsApp us on [number] so we can make it right."
Avoid copying the same reply under every review. Readers notice, and it looks like nobody is really reading.
How is TripAdvisor different?
TripAdvisor reviewers are often visitors writing longer, more detailed reviews, and many plan a whole trip around them. Claim your free listing, add good photos and opening hours, and reply to reviews just as you do on Google. Hotels and tour guides in Zanzibar, Arusha and the city centre often recommend restaurants with strong TripAdvisor ratings to their guests.
In short
To get more restaurant reviews, make it easy with a QR code to your Google review link on every table, receipt and delivery message, and ask happy customers at the right moment. Reply to every review: thank people for good ones, and answer bad ones with an apology, a short explanation, what you changed and an offer to talk privately. Never buy or fake reviews, and use the feedback to fix recurring problems.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get more Google reviews for my restaurant?
Share your Google review link as a QR code on tables and receipts, send it after delivery orders and ask happy customers directly.
Should I reply to every review?
Yes. Replies show future customers that you care, and they encourage more people to leave reviews.
How do I respond to a bad restaurant review?
Thank the customer, apologise, explain briefly without excuses, say what you changed and invite them to contact you privately.
Can I delete a bad review on Google?
You cannot delete genuine reviews, but you can report reviews that break Google's policies, such as spam or fake reviews.
Is it okay to offer a discount for reviews?
Do not offer rewards in exchange for positive reviews. Platforms like Google do not allow it, and it can harm your listing.
